Feature: Glen Powell Invites You to “Netflix and Chill” with His New Rom-Com
In 2016, Richard Linklater premiered the college-set “spiritual sequel” to his ensemble masterpiece Dazed and Confused: Everybody Wants Some!!.Similarly packed with young, new talent, Everybody Wants Some!! inspired film critics and fans alike to wonder who might be its Matthew McConaughey-esque breakout. Mileage certainly varied, but most focused on two standouts: the film’s compelling female lead, Zoey Deutch, and her on-screen love interest’s friend, the scene-stealing Glen Powell.
Though Powell and Deutch oozed natural chemistry, the pair didn’t share much screen time in Everybody Wants Some!! Netflix’s latest original film, Set It Up, more than makes up the difference. Here, Deutch and Powell play two meddling assistants who try to matchmake their high-powered bosses, played by Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu. It’s clear, however, from their very first scene that the irresistible Deutch and Powell—who spark and fizz with old-school screwball charm—are the couple to be watching.
Powell has made a name for himself by weaponizing his all-American frat-boy appeal in order to deftly skewer some of cinema’s most obnoxious bro tropes. In this film, he sets his sights on the cutthroat world of New York venture capitalism—and he has the terrible hair to prove it. When he’s not stealing scenes—his previous projects include Scream Queens and Hidden Figures—Powell is working on writing and producing his own projects. He hopped on the phone to take a closer look at whether Netflix can revive the floundering rom-com genre, and how Set It Up’s writer, Katie Silberman, and director, Claire Scanlon, have turned a classic will-they, won’t-they story from feminine to feminist.
Vanity Fair: In your previous life, did you ever work as an assistant?
Glen Powell: I used to be a script reader at Sony for a while, for this very powerful woman. That was not fun. One of my first days on the job, I was supposed to connect a call with Ron Howard, and I screwed it up. I’m working with Ron Howard on something right now, and I actually haven’t told him the story. I screwed up the call, and I got reamed for it. So I was never allowed to touch a phone again. I also was sort of a manny. I’ve worked at hotels, just across the gamut, and I’ve had plenty of time to get put in my place in this town. I don’t think there’s any chance I’ll ever not be humble, because I know exactly where I could be right now.
I was going to ask you for old job horror stories.
For research for this movie, I went to my agency and I kind of treated all the assistants to lunch, and I just listened to them tell horrible-boss stories. Then I worked the phones for my agent for like, three days, and then I went to this venture-capitalist firm here in New York, just to see what that world was like. That haircut that you see in the movie—that horrible Southern swoop—that came out of that. I went to this V.C. firm, and every dude had the same haircut. Get ready — you’re about to add a new name to your Hollywood crush list.
With a memorable role in Hidden Figures, Glen Powell is making waves in Hollywood for his combo of good looks and impressive talent. The actor, 29, stars in Netflix’s latest romcom Set It Up, with Zoey Deutch, Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu and has a long list of projects in the works that will keep him in the spotlight for months to come.
But although he’s a handsome face with a charming personality, the actor packs the double punch of also being a skilled writer and producer. Read on for all the reasons Powell is the next big thing in Hollywood.
He’s following in the footsteps of some serious heavyweights
Powell is aiming for the big leagues when it comes to goals for his career.
“I think most people that I’ve modeled my career after have had a really strong hand in the development process,” Powell says. “I’ve gotten to work with Sylvester Stallone, Kevin Costner, we’re talking to Tom Cruise about something right now. It’s all these guys that are very influential and they know what they do and they know what they do well.”
He can also count a major heavyweight in his corner: Denzel Washington. The Oscar winner has given Powell advice in the past about starting a career as an actor and writer.
“Denzel Washington is another that’s been a mentor since I’ve moved out here,” he says. “Denzel writes and directs and produces and stars. He just goes, ‘Don’t look at the other lanes. Don’t look at what everybody else is doing. Just focus on what you do better than everybody else, and just work in that lane.’ ”
He’s working on a superhero movie with Leonardo DiCaprio that mightactually save the world
His writing career is off to an impressive start. The actor is currently writing a movie version of Captain Planet — a ’90s TV show that doubled as a way to educate kids about the environment. And he’s co-producing it with non other than environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio.
“It’s really, really fun,” Powell says of the movie. “I talked to Leo about it and he phrased it perfectly, which is like, if there is a superhero movie that can actually save the world, it’s this one. It’s irreverent, it’s fun. People love superhero movies, but this one actually has potential to really open up people’s minds and heart.” [Read More]

An easy-going dude from Austin, Texas, Glen Powell’s (@glenpowell) career path led him straight to Hollywood. With acting credits that include Hidden Figures, The Expendables 3 and upcoming, high-profile projects also destined to impress, the young hunk admits that his heart still belongs to Texas.
When did you know you wanted to be an actor?
When you’re fascinated by everything but have a short attention span, you’re well suited to be an actor. After seeing Top Gun, I wanted to be a fighter pilot; after Apollo 13, I wanted to be an astronaut; after Cool Runnings, I wanted to be a Jamaican bobsledder; after Braveheart, I wanted to re-liberate Scotland. After Raiders of the Lost Ark, I begged my parents to buy me a bullwhip. I carried it around everywhere. I wasn’t supposed to use it in the house, but rules are meant to be broken. There is still a chunk missing from the ceiling in my childhood bedroom.Even though you now live in LA, you’re still a Texas cowboy at heart, aren’t you?
After shooting a role in a film called The Great Debaters, directed by Denzel Washington, I received a call in my freshman dorm at the University of Texas from Ed Limato, Denzel’s agent at William Morris. He wanted to sit down [with me] before The Great Debaters premiered. When I met with him and his colleagues, I wore Wranglers and a cowboy hat. He asked, “Did you just get off a farm?” I said, “Well…yeah.” Since then, my style has slightly adapted to Los Angeles, so I don’t look like such a cowboy. But I’ll break out the Stetson for game days or when I’m gathering the Texans in LA for some rowdiness. I do most of my writing and relaxing in Texas, so I rarely have time to miss it too much. Whenever my jeans get too tight and the Vs in my shirt get too deep, the family calls me back to Texas before they lose me to West Coast fashion completely. [Full Interview]
